Unlimited Calling from your mobile

Well, it looks as though all the carriers are getting on board now with the ‘All You Can Eat’ wireless plans take 2. I remember a few years ago that ATT and Nextel tried this same tactic but at $150 which was not mass market idea but just a move to get higher usage clients on board. These plans disappeared but are now making a come back.

Sprint recently started advertising their unlimited plan. A true “All you can use” plan where for $99 you get unlimited voice, data and text. Which seems to me to be the smart thing to do as users will naturally gravitate to the plan for one of the three features making it a win situation for the carrier. For example, if you are paying $75 now for your service you probably aren’t going over any of your limits. Now for an extra $15 you can have unlimited and that sounds great but you probably aren’t going to use more of all three features any more than you are now. Investors n the companies are a bit scared that the carriers are going to get into a price war which wouldn’t be such a bad thing. We all know that customer service is not the greatest, the technology we have here in the U.S. is far behind the rest of the world and basically we are not really getting what we pay for. Where’s the “value”?

Verizon announced that it will be falling in line with its version of a unlimited calling plan (no data and text included). Of course it wouldn’t be a party without ATT and Tmobile. Both of which have offered similar plans. Tmobile having the best ‘value’ offering in the U.S. is adding unlimited text and instant messaging to their plan.

So where does this leave you? Will you be switching your plan today?

I think VoIP is going to put more pressure on cell carriers as high speed wireless gets more widespread.

I heard the other day that Google maybe thinking of buying eBay and then making Skype a part of android. I agree with you that as the U.S. wireless infrastructure gets updated, we’ll see a slew of new features and services available. Maybe the recent unlimited calling plans will cause pricing to drop and your wireless plan will be something like $40 and unlimited everything. After all, there are plenty of people with the winMo devices that are using Skype or some other voip application when near hotspots. I think it’s pretty funny that carriers still try to lock out its customers form getting the full feature set available in phones like bluetooth communication and laptop tethering.
