Virtualization on a Mac

I’m trying out VMWare’s Fusion since it supports dual core processors. I used Parallels for a few months and was happy with it. However, I upgraded to Leopard and found I needed to use the latest offering so I find myself back in the market. I’ll report back on my opinion shortly bu int he mean time. Which one of the two are you using?

Happy Valentine’s Day

photo.jpg So it’s Valentine’s Day.  I tell my wife we are celebrating the slaughter of monks in some dark alley.  I’m told “there better be flowers today”.  We settled on sushi at a near by shop that is BYOB (that means I get to bring my own sake).  Twitter was filled with <3 all day and there seems to be a impromptu pillow fight somewhere in San Francisco.  It seems to have been a fairly light day around here with the exception of the office network going crazy.  Lucky for me I had my Airport express hanging around and I can still be mobile.  Heck the darn little gadget works better than my previous 2 routers.  So how are you spending Valentine’s Day?  Are you doing anything fun and unique or simple and traditional?

Flash on the iPhone?

February 13, 2008 by phoFuki

iPhone users such as myself have been happy with the limited default features of the iPhone since launch.  We have all excitedly awaited firmware releases, hoping for some added or unlocked features that should have been available at launch.  There are still a few annoying features that we have yet to see such as a ‘mark all read’ or ‘delete all’ in our in boxes.  We’ve gotten by with the growing number of webapps available to us.  Of course, if you have unlocked and/or jailbroken your iPhone then you probably are running other apps and maybe an NES emulator of some sort.

There has been a lot of speculation as to what the release of the SDK will bring to iPhone users and it looks as though Flash support has been added to the list.  Of course, this has huge implications such as watching video from other sources other than the built in YouTube app, video podcasts, interactive websites.  Apparently, Flash support  (or lack of) has been more a function of business rather than hardware.  Flash has been one of the missing pieces of having that full fledged desktop browser experience and it looks like we might just be getting very soon.

let’s just keep our fingers crossed for the release of the SDK this month and Flash support alongside ;)

iPod Classic vs. The Touch

February 12, 2008 by phoFuki

Strange events have taken motion beginning with the release of the anticipated 32gb iPod touch. Suddenly, several of my friends spontaneously gained a great deal of interest in replacing their current iPods (not very current by any means). Out of their desire for a new iPod many questions were raised due to too many options. Apple has milked the pmp market to its best ability. From the initial release of the iPod and the few choices to a lineup large enough to make your head spin.

Starbucks dumps T-Mobile for ATT

February 11, 2008 by phoFuki

I don’t know if anyone saw this coming. Seemed to me like T-Mobile and Starbucks were getting along great but after 6 years they are calling it quits. The change wont come until this spring but it is certainly an interesting change, especially for those that use the Wi-Fi while sipping their favorite caffeinated treat.

I found this to be most interesting since I have been considering stopping my edge service on my iPhone and simply picking up a Wi-Fi service like that offered at Starbucks. I find that I am generally in fairly close proximity to a Starbucks that I could easily stop by to get my email fix or check to make sure the internet was still moving along. After all, we all know that EDGE is only a happy thing when we have no other option but the reality is its so slow that it really is useless in most cases, so why not spend that $20 on some Wi-Fi? That’s the question I have been grappling with lately in my quest to get more value for my money.

Brain Blast - I figure I can switch a parent over to ATT from Verizon to get the unlimited free access to ATT’s WiFi available at my Starbucks and Barnes & Noble. Now that’s saving and getting more bang for my dollar. Oh, how the wheels are turning now.

Speculation- Now that ATT will be providing the WiFi access at Starbucks, maybe they’ll give iPhone users free access. You know, kind of like part of a larger plan to offset the ridiculously slow and expensive EDGE network. ;) I know wishful thinking. But if it happens, you read it here first.

How do you feel about the switch to ATT at your favorite java house?

*UPDATE: c|net just reported that Starbucks customers will get 2 hours free per day. That sounds like a winner to me. I guess its not much different than the 1hour Caribou has been giving (I hope it’s faster). I suppose anything can change between now and the time this switch comes about near me but I hope it only gets better.

user made content @ superbowl

February 4, 2008 by phoFuki

At about a cost of $90,000 a second or $2.7mil for 30 seconds, we’ve grown accustomed to the entertaining SuperBowl commercials. However, i htink most would agree that user generated content has taken a firm hold in the entertainment industry, so much so that many big ad agencies are replicating the feel of the home brew. User generated content has a greater viral effect, typically more original and almost always far more entertaining. This year it really became apparent with one of the best ad spots coming from Doritos through a contest they held last year . Basically they held a contest for a SuperBowl ad featuring the nacho flavored chip to be created by users at home. Video entries quickly made it up on YouTube and well the winner was shown during the biggest sporting event of the year. If you missed it watch it below.

Nokia’s N95 vs. the iPhone

So right before the iPhone was released in the UK the BBC ran commercial, well more of a spoof on the Mac ads running here in the U.S. With the ever so present interest in the N95, I thought this would be an appropriate time to air on this site. Thank you once again YouTube ;)
