I finally broke down and replaced my InCase case for my new iPhone 3G the other day. I actually had another case I had been using for a few months with my 1st gen iPhone. It was one of those cheap $10 deals with a magnetic closure. The case itself was a little large for my phone but it was cheap and did its job without being to bulky. I actually prefer to just throw my phone in my pocket and go but when I’m in my executive fatigues (ie. dress pants) I find that I am more comfortable with the phone on my hip out of my pocket.
I purchased the InCase case since my previous experience was great. A well made product that lasted and fit nicely not to mention the minimalist feel of it on my belt. The second reason for my purchase and most important is because of the magnets in the flap of my cheap case. Every time I put my 3G iPhone in the case with the magnetic closure, the phone seemed to freak out. I mean that it would get warm as if the GPS or mobile radio would just run on forever getting very hot.
I did some research online and the results were mixed. Some posts stated the same or worse results when using a case with a magnetic closure. While others reported no problems. Some went in depth as to the what the magnets were made from. Apparently the magnets made from rare earth metals are very powerful and thus create numerous problems. What I did notice was that the bad results tended to be more from users of the 3G iPhone versus the 1st generation model.
Maybe my problems were just in my head but I’m not really willing to take that risk to save a few dollars. So what has your experience been with cases with magnetic closures? I know I was always taught that magnets and electronic devices don’t go together but I think that depends on the magnet…right??
I wasn’t going to spend any time posting on this subject. There has been plenty of blog space dedicated to it, especially since WWDC and quite frankly, I learned my lesson the first time around. The fact that the new firmware will be available to my current iPhone is really what has me excited. I can’t wait to see what apps are available and yeah, I’ll be purchasing a game or two as well. So why am I even spending any time on this subject?
Over the past couple weeks I have been asked the same question over and over…"So..are you gonna get the new iPhone " The wink is because all last year from the release, I was saying to my friends that by next year we’ll see the 3G version. Of course the more I looked at the phone, the more obsessed I became with it. Ultimately, my wife bought one for me for our anniversary (albeit a 4gig model but an iPhone none the less). And to re-iterate, this is by far the best mobile phone I have ever had. I make that statement based solely on the fact that even after a year, I don’t have the itch to get anything new. The typical life span of a mobile phone for me is 6-9 months and then its time to get something new. I simply just get bored and dissatisfied with he user experience of most phones.
So why am I not getting in line? Simple, I still really like my current phone. But here a re a few other reasons.
I’m not sold on the plastic back of the 3G version (I tend to drop my phones).
$20 for my current data plan is too much and I think $30 is worse, especially without SMS included or included tethering capability.
I think we’ll see a big price drop some the holidays and/or we’ll see a new model with more capacity so we can really take advantage of the plethora of apps being developed. The one thing that that really stick out for me and I haven’t seen anything written up about is the fact that the phone is a bit thicker in the back. Presumably this is to accommodate the larger battery and GPS module. Now lets back track for a moment, the reason the 1st gen can’t get above the 16g capacity is because there is no space for the added memory chip like there is in the Touch. Well, now there would seem to be more space, so maybe there will be one by the holidays which would be in line with how Apple has been releasing updated models to its line over the past 2 years.
Sara over at pop17.com put up a great video on this subject and I think it summed up how I was feeling on the whole buying a 3G iPhone question. Of course, after it’s out who knows what I’ll end up doing. Last year I lasted about 60 days.
I finally got around to ordering some moo cards a couple weeks ago. I had seen them online and trolled the flickr moo card group. There was even a little article in yesterdays Wall Street Journal about calling cards and how unique they have become. I could have just done up business cards but i wanted to try something different that would be more memorable. I have to admit, I was also just plain curious to see these things up close. I thought about uploading my own photos but in the end opted for a simple pre-design with my own text. I was satisfied with it online but when I opened my package, I was just blown away. Not only did I get my cards but i got a little bonus sampling of the stickers you can also order. I opened my box and was just giddy with how well they turned out.
What you don’t know about Moo cards? That’s ok, I’m finding that a lot of people don’t know about them.
To put it simply, MiniCards are little cards with your photos or
designs on one side, and your details on the other. We like to
think of them as little calling-cards that you hand out to keep
in touch with friends, or new people you meet. MiniCards are
28 mm x 70 mm and can be personalized with images from
our partners, with pictures from your desktop or MOO
designer’s images.
Pricing: 100 for $19.99 / €14.99 / £9.99
What I was most surprised about were the size and detail. I know the measurements (see above) but I have a problem where I really have to physically hold it to get the size. These things are tiny (which I like) and surprisingly crisp in detail, much like an iPhone and why I probably like them so much. I can really see the facination with these little gems. Not to mention the limitless possibilities of what you can creat with them. The wheels are already turning to figure out what I can come up with next…stay tuned
LOL! So it was boundto happen sooner or later. We see those funniest home videos with the kid putting a peanut butter sandwich into the family VCR. sometime we see a clip of a kid throwing a parents cellphone down on the ground mimicking something on T.V. I was lucky with my first child not to experience the Sharpie on the television screen or VCR sandwich. The worst I had to deal with was some crayon on the walls (no big deal..right?).
My son comes up to me while I’m sitting typing away on my MBP today (the same one I took a part the other day) and proceeds to insert something into the side of the computer, specifically the ethernet port. You can see in the picture here. I’m not sure what it is but I know it shouldn’t be there and I’m a bit scared that the ports connectors may be damaged and that would make me frown .
[UPDATE]
Great news! The alien object has been removed with the help of some tweezers and patience. There is also no apparent damage. I guess my son is lucky today or I am. Now I have to go find some Sharpies and lock them up. Who knows what’s next.
By the way, permanent marker on your flat screen isn’t so bad. There are fairly easy ways of removing the offending mark. The most common would be to actually go back over the mark with a fresh marker and then quickly wipe away.
If you’ve owned a laptop before and had it for some time then you know that at some point you have to take the machine apart. I know it’s just human nature to do it but when it comes to your $2k+ machine, you tend to take it on the cautious side. I’ve had a few laptops in my days. For some reason they always tend to last me longer than my desktops have (strange I know). A year ago, I found myself in the position with no other options than to do what I feared. Take a laptop apart without instructions to do so. I had my Presario 2700 and needed to replace the hard drive and figure out some other problems. Well, it was quite the daunting task. I couldn’t find any instructions on this task online to my dismay. So i just started to unscrew any and all screws. Well, this is not a small laptop but it was made as if they crammed an awful lot in the plastic case. It took several hours and a lot of patience. From time to time I still find that I need to take it apart (usually to re-solder something). Although I’ve done it before, I still find it to be a daunting task.
Fast forward to today: I’ve been noticing a strange noise coming from one of the fans in my macbook pro. I did a little research and found iFixit. What a great company, they not only had just about any part for the macbook pro (at reasonable prices) but they also had clear instructions on how to install any part they sell complete with pictures. Wow, I checked out the instructions on taking my macbook pro apart and found that it really wasn’t that difficult. Actually, it wasn’t difficult at all and only took a few minutes to accomplish.
You can find invisible protection for just about any of your electronic devices over at InvisibleShield. You’ve probably seen these guys at one of the trade shows and this is the ultimate in protection for your electronics. What is invisible shield? I’m glad you asked because I didn’t know until I saw it on a podcast earlier this year.
ZAGG’s invisibleSHIELD™ is a thin, polyurethane film originally created for the military to protect the leading edge of helicopter blades. What’s unique about this military-grade film is how tough it is – it doesn’t scratch. Introduced in early 2005, the invisibleSHIELD is the first product of its kind. Its patent-pending, full body protection has revolutionized the industry and has changed the way people think of protecting their devices
The best benefit of the invisbleshield (besides its military grade protection) is the fact that it doesn’t take away from the design and looks of your device. iPhone owners know exactly what I mean. You have something that is slim and sexy only to be hidden by some big bulky covering of some sort.
You’ll find a dizzying array of devices the invisibleshield has already been designed for at their web site and if you don’t find what you are looking for, they can customize one for your needs.
Strange events have taken motion beginning with the release of the anticipated 32gb iPod touch. Suddenly, several of my friends spontaneously gained a great deal of interest in replacing their current iPods (not very current by any means). Out of their desire for a new iPod many questions were raised due to too many options. Apple has milked the pmp market to its best ability. From the initial release of the iPod and the few choices to a lineup large enough to make your head spin.
We knew it was coming and you know you have been waiting patiently. The wait is over, Apple unleashed its 16GB iPhone on the world today. Head on over to the Apple store for yours!
So right before the iPhone was released in the UK the BBC ran commercial, well more of a spoof on the Mac ads running here in the U.S. With the ever so present interest in the N95, I thought this would be an appropriate time to air on this site. Thank you once again YouTube
Ph? (Vietnamese pronunciation in IPA: written pho and pronounced "fuh" IPA: /f?/ in English) is a traditional Vietnamesenoodle soup dish. ~wikipedia.org Ok so I'm not some restaurateur, I'm just an average guy who likes his gadgets for what they do to make life better and otherwise bring a smile when opening a box for the first time. This blog is simply the recording of many of my adventures/mishaps with gadgets and my foray into the blogosphere with an occasional side of something special. I do a bit of web design and most recently my focus has been on Wordpress customization. You'll probably hear a lot regarding Apple products or products for my mac. I'm a recent convert after being in the Windows universe for many years. My first computer was vic20, upgraded to the 64 and then I purchased my first desktop (Yeah, I remember having to make that boot disk to make certain things run right). I was convinced to try out a mac last year and the new macbook pros with their Intel chips left me with no reason not to. I have ben ecstatic ever since (I don't think I qualify just yet as fanboy status but I'm getting their). Yeah, I drank the Kool-Ade and am waiting for a refill ;)
